The experiment is over, and the results are in ...

... Blogger is a better place to blog than the free version of wordpress (wordpress.com).

I didn't realize this until I started blogging there. Blogger seems to have quite a bit more flexibility in what I can add to the site than the free version of wordpress.

Any other bloggers out there agree with me ... or have a different opinion? LEt me know in the comments.

BTW - I've decided to repost all the postings I had at wordpress over on this site.

The backlog

Sorry about not posting more frequently. The next few blog entries will be about some things that have happened in my life over the last several months. Don’t worry - it is mostly good news. I’ve just been waiting for the right time to blog about it.

So, with those “teaser” statements, get ready for some good stuff!

I'm outta here!

Written by Bob McCormick on 9/25/2008 08:59:00 PM

Well,

More precisely, I won't be updating this particular blog anymore. Instead, I've moved to WordPress!

You can find my new, hopefully-improved blog at http://mcc0rmick.wordpress.com/.

See you there!

An overview of this blog

Written by Bob McCormick on 5/21/2008 05:45:00 PM

I see from the multitudes now flocking to this site :*/ that folks want to know ... "Hey, what is this blog all about? He teases us with the NASA space stuff, but then doesn't say anything about that".

Well, I have heard your lamentations long enough, so I will come down from by blogging perch atop Mount Olympus and give you a smattering of an idea as to where I think this blog thing will go.

FIRST, I've decided to live up to the title of this blog. It says "A Blog A Day", so dagburnit, that's what I should deliver, as a minimum frequency.

NEXT, let's talk about some of the "themes" in this blog, which should give you, the almighty reader, an idea of what will be coming.

Currently, I have 11 different topics I like to blather about. Some of my entries will be about more than one of these topics. Here's the blog entry categories:

alt.space - insights into and thoughts about the plans and progress of the non-NASA/gov't, non-AirForce, non-"Big boy" (Boeing, Lockheed Martin) aerospace companies that are trying to get humans back in space. I'm avoiding reporting on "the usual suspects" with this category.

nasa_plans - In January 2004, George Bush, as a result of the studies done after the Coumbia accident, announced the Vision for Space Exploration (VSE). I'll have several entries that talk about what folks think about NASA's progress implementing it.

past_future - As the modern philosopher Yogi Berra said, "It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future." It's amazing to see how people in the past thought the future would unfold. These entries illustrate how far off they got.

nostalgia - just nostalgic wistful memories of things I lived through. Again, from Yogi Berra, "Nostalgia isn't what it used to be."

msm - my thoughts on the mainstream media, and why people will depend on blogs & the internet much more heavily than in the past.

interesting - things that seem, well, interesting to me. Your mileage may vary.

inspirational - things that move me in some manner. Again, your mileage may vary.

Humor - funny observations by myself & others.

Houston - It's my hometown & where I basically grew up. It's been through ups & downs & I wish it the best. I care, so you should care - and if you don't, then blog about your own locality, OK?

Boys - I've got a teenage son & 1 who's about to be a teen. Before long, college & the "Real world" will await them. These blog entries are a preparation for that.

alt.energy - In the 70's, it was observed that coal, oil, gas, & uranium were finite resources. Prices on those commodities have gone down & up, but the fundamental fact that they are finite has not changed. These entries identify what f0lks are doing to contend with that fundamental fact.

Anything else you'd like me to blog about? Let me know in the comments.

In any event, I hope you like the blog & visit often.

"A Blog a day" started a year ago today ...

Written by Bob McCormick on 7/05/2007 02:37:00 PM

and looking over the entries, I've fallen a bit short of making at least one a day.

Bummer.

Also, I think I need to work on the content of this blog site.

I see that most of my entries are related to humor. Maybe things just aren't that funny?

Anyone have better ideas for the direction this blog should take? Let me know in the comments!

Blogging will be light for the next few days ...

The reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated ...

Written by Bob McCormick on 11/06/2006 10:18:00 PM

Well folks,

It's been quite a while - too long, really - since my last non-football related post.

I have been tied up in quite a few things which have prevented my desire to get to "A Blog A Day".

Part of this has been due to console manning. Over the past 2 months or so, I've been on console three times. once, pinch-hitting for one day, another time, for a full week (or as much as I could while supporting more Japanese/NASA meetings); and finally, this past week (on the graveyard shift). Amazingly, each time I was on console, we seemed to be involved in either fixing or activating the Russian Elektron system (which is capable of converting water into breathable oxygen and venting hydrogen overboard). The crew was finally able to get it running this past week, which is a relief on having to provide oxygen by other means (i.e., it decreases crew stay time limits). Now all they have to do is get ready for a Russian EVA and the next Shuttle flight. No problem. ;*P

The other part of my delay in getting back to you was based on good news ... my parents sold their house and found a new place near where I live! This is good news, but it created a short term burden for myself and my brother and sister - my parents needed help in moving out of their 5 bedroom house, down to a 2 bedroom townhouse. (As George Carlin so aptly put it, it's all about the stuff.) I am glad to report that they have sucessfully moved, with no fatalities and few serious injuries. ;*)

In all seriousness, I will miss the old house we lived in. I remember moving into it when I was in Intermediate School, and I basically grew up there. My family - or at least, my parents - lived there for 31 years, and it will be hard not to think of it as the place I need to go to to see them. However, I must admit - my parents haven't been in their new place for 1 week and I like the convenience.

My first podcast!

How exciting!
Gabcast! For "A blog a day" #1

This is cool technology!

...but also, a solution looking for a problem ...

Upon further review - this is a better way to accomplish the same thing. The old way required a script that was bringing my PC to its knees.

(Note to self: tell gabcast that theire method for having folks link to thier podcasts ain't making it ...)

White and Nerdy

Must be seen to be believed. I don't have cable, and I think this has been on there some time, so I guess I'm behind the times ... again ...(sigh)

Folks at work were reminded of each other when they saw it.

Thanks for sharing, Ms. Minimiles!

Viewers poll: The viewers have spoken ... I think

Written by Bob McCormick on 10/02/2006 10:30:00 PM

Due to technical difficulties, last week's viewers poll blogsite has been sacked. When I last had results for the poll, it looked like an alt.space summary was the leading vote-getter. So, I'll do my best to develop a set of blog entires on what I think the current state of alt.space is over the next week - maybe more.

This weeks viewers poll picks up essentially where the last one left off. Here are my proposed topics (in no particular order) ...

1. MSM (i.e., Mainstream Media) - what bugs me about it/them

2. Houston Cougars football attendance - a diagnosis and some suggestions

3. What is planning? My philosophy

4. Something I have not thought of, but maybe you have. (If you have any, leave comments for me to this blog entry - below).

You can see the poll over on the right hand side of my blog. The polls remain open from now through the 10th of October. Again - pretend you're in Chicago and VOTE EARLY AND VOTE OFTEN!

Weekly Blog Features - 9/25/06

Written by Bob McCormick on 9/24/2006 08:57:00 PM

Here's my weekly "tease" on what I'll be blogging about this week

Standard Items -
C-USA Football/Basketball Roundup
Fantasy Football roundup
Weekly ISS ops summary (I'll be on console this wk)

Potpourri (potential blog articles) -

The people have spoken. Last week, I put up a poll to ask you, the reader, to let me know what you want. Well, the people have spoken, although there were very few of you that took the poll (it was more like a faint whisper).

The "runaway" winner (by a vote of 3 to 1 - it got 3, the next nearest got only 1) was "People whose 15 minutes are up". Look forward to seeing this blog entry in a blog near you.

Note: I went ahead and just posted the STS-115 summary, because it made sense to.

Also note that, even though it came in second, I also posted my work on "How to be a NASA Flight Controller".

Why did I do it? Why did I jump the gun?

Well, I had done most of the work - and I also wanted to enter it as an easy way to increase viewership (thanks Darren Rowse)!

You see, folks, it's all about eyeballs. That's what the Internet mavens tell me it's all about, and who am I to argue the point? ;*)

Anyways, check out the voting "booth" on the right, and as they say in Chicago - Vote Early and Vote Often!

Hopefully, this week, we can get the voting % to be higher than a US presidential election ... not that I'm setting a high goal there or anything ... :*/

VOTE ON THESE NOW TO LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU WANT!!! (Or vote for "Something Completely different" and drop me a comment or e-mail).

1. Houston Cougars football attendance – I’m working up an extensive set of analyses/assessment on this & intend to share. It may be a one blog entry or multiple-blog installment.
2. What is XPOP, and why do I care?
3. What is planning? (A philosophical question)
4. The alt.space summary (may be a standard item)
5. Lists I'm working on -
A. 5 reasons why you won't catch me discussing anything controversial in my blogs about space policy, NASA, JSC, or ISS:
6. Something completely different

Fixing the bloglines backlog

Written by Bob McCormick on 8/29/2006 11:08:00 PM

Whew!

I'm normally the first one to praise bloglines.com, but I've been contending with a problem related to it.

At one point, I had over 600 posts marked!

So far, I've whittled down the list to just under 250, by saving the links off to del.icio.us or just flat-out deleting them.

Also, things are complicated due to the fact that I'm using blogger.com's beta site here (as you can see). I really like the ability to establish tags to each of my postings, which is why I jumped to it as a beta site. But I lost my ads in the process (I think I've got that problem fixed now) and am having other difficulties editing the look and feel of the site.

Granted, html gets unwieldy, but I don't like it when GUI interfaces "help" me by restricting how I can modify the look and feel of the site. Is anyone with me on this? I just hope that blogger.com can put the html editing in their blogging capabilities soon.

Yeah, I know it's a beta site, but a blogger can hope, can't he?!?

Trying to find the "battle rhythm"

Written by Bob McCormick on 8/05/2006 10:51:00 AM

Well...

I've found myself in a weird situation.

I'm finding that I typically drag myself in to work barely at 8:00, and I feel sleepy most of the day. I'm feeling sleepy because I'm not getting enough sleep . I'm up too late looking at my 112 bloglines feeds, trying to come up with ideas/entries for the blog.

My personal timeline is working something like this:

0130 Sleep start
0600 Wakeup (Note: Only 4.5 hrs of sleep!)
0800 In to work
1700 Finish work (can drag to 1800 or 1900)
1-2 hrs of nap (makeup for the short sleep)
1900 Dinner
1945-2030 TV
2030-2115 Dog Walk
2115 - 0130 On the internet, monitoring my 100+ blogline feeds, attempting to come up with something for my blog

Clearly, the excess bloglines entry and lack of blog material is driving everything else (lack of sleep, lost time with the family, lack of exercise ...). I could also cut back on the TV watching as well.

So the trick is ... how do I establish a plan that looks more like the following...

0600 Wakeup
0800 Work
1700 End work
1745 Workout
1900 Dinner
1935 Walk the dog
2010 Blog entry, maintenance, research
2230 Sleep (Note: This gives me 7.5 hrs sleep ... a much better duration)

My hunch is that to get to the right "battle rhythm", I need to "just do it". Of course, this means that life moves along predictably - which can be a stretch.

Anyone out there have any other ideas on how to get to where I want to be, or how to control the unpredictability?

Light posting ...

Written by Bob McCormick on 7/26/2006 05:40:00 PM

... it's what happens when you're on vacation & just scraping by to get connected to the internet.

I expect to get back online more regularly on Saturday.

Winnowing the crop

Written by Bob McCormick on 7/09/2006 01:04:00 PM

I have a regular account with Bloglines, and I have subscribed to several blog feeds.

Problem is, it's now at 97 blogs. With over 500 "keep new" permalinks.

I am always on the lookout for good material for this blog, but I generally consider new material (i.e., info that isn't more than 2 days old) to be the right fit.

Most of the 500 permalinks, while containing good links to sources of info, aren't less than 2 days old. So it's time to "winnow the crop"!

I hope it won't take long to do this.

Light blogging day

Written by Bob McCormick on 7/08/2006 11:32:00 PM

Spent most of the day entertaining folks, so I barely squeaked this blog in!

I've got a couple of ideas for larger blog entries, but they need more development.

Ciao for now!

Just barely getting my 2nd blog in on time!
